Six Benefits of Transitioning from a Fixed Jaw Vise

In my last blog post, I explained the many benefits of using a zero-point workholding system. I mentioned that making the transition can be daunting, so today, I will provide insight into what is required to ease the transition from a fixed jaw vise to a zero-point workholding system.

Changing Your Mindset

With a fixed jaw vise, using the fixed jaw as the reference point in the CNC program is common. Doing so allows the workpiece datum to match the fixture reference point. Since the fixed jaw doesn’t move, you don’t need to worry about repeatability.

On a zero-point system and a self-centering vise, the fixture reference point cannot be on the vise jaw because the jaws will be in different locations for each workpiece. So, we must set the fixture reference point to something else, typically the center of the zero-point base. Since the workpiece datum is different from the vise jaws, repeatability is now critical. Thanks to Mate DynoGrip vises and DynoLock bases offering best-in-class repeatability at 0.0004” (0.010mm) and 0.0002” (0.005mm), respectively, you won’t need to worry about probing your workpieces unless your tolerances are below 0.0004”.

Machining Process Updates

Understanding this different approach is critical to your success when making the transition. It also provides insight into these necessary updates to your machining processes:

  1. Update your CNC programs
    a. Update offsets.
    b. Check tool paths for improved efficiency.
    c. Check tool paths for clearance issues or collisions.
    d. Add workpiece probing if required.
  2. Review your cutting tools
    a. Check all tool lengths and tool holder clearances.
    b. When possible, use shorter tools for less chatter and improved surface finishes.
  3. Review dimensioned drawings and tolerances.
  4. Review your workholding options
    a. Zero-point bases offer a wider variety of top tool options. Don’t limit yourself to just self-centering vises. See if other options provide efficiencies.
    b. Get the most out of quick-change jaws and review where you may use machinable jaws.

Benefits of Transitioning from a Fixed Jaw Vise

Changing from fixed jaw vises to zero-point bases and self-centering vises is an achievable goal and can benefit your operations tremendously. When done right, you can expect to see a quick return on investment in the following ways:

  1. Quicker set-up and changeover times
  2. Shorter cycle times
  3. Improved cutting tool life
  4. Improved surface finishes
  5. Reduced scrap and rework
  6. Improved productivity.
